"beginner sets" by mail
I have seen lots of "beginner sets" by mail offered in classifieds in mags like Coins and others. Typically they will give an assortment of typical silver coinage of years past for under $10. I decided to do three of these. Mailed em off today. If they send me crap I will fugheddaboudit, but if they send me nice for the price, I will post their info here as a little reward for them and y'alls.

Let me know, Anty Ep: I say you will get well worn coins. Hopefully they will be good years. The Great Ag |

Well probably but curiousity has struck.

Re: "beginner sets" by mail
Here is one that I just got filled and I'm mildly pleased with the result.
"8.95 plus SASE gets walker half, silver quarter, merc dime, war nickel, buff nickel. Rick Feiler, pob 1664, Long Grove OK 73443" Just got the coins, as promised, the best quality is the walking half, a definite EF, which PCGS says the 43 is $10. So that seems worth it right there. The merc dime is fine the quareer is good, the buff is good, the war nickel is fine. A nice thing to receive in today's mail for sure. |

Good show, Anty Ep:
Don't trust PCGS prices, they are high, very high. All the dealers I know cannot sell at PCGS prices. I would say probably around $4 or $5 is a better price and more realistic. The Great Ag |

I agree on PCGS prices - they are retail prices not wholesale - dealers can't buy retail or they don't make a profit..........so I take PCGS prices and knock 20-25% off most figures I see from them for a better idea of what I might be able to sell a coin for. |
Re: "beginner sets" by mail
I am looking here and it seems to me that for that partic'ler deal, I probably got them all for pretty close to melt, or maybe just under, which makes it a worthwhile exercise in addition to being fun

Re: "beginner sets" by mail
I have got 2 back so far. First reply, very quick was "Rick Feiler" who put a little classified in the back of Coins or one of the other like mags, not sure, as I ripped it out. 8.95 plus sase (9.34 total cost) got me one walker half, one silver quarter, one merc dime, one silver war nickel, one buffalo nickel.
I was rather pleased with this because according to coinflation, the silver coins add up to $9.92 at spot price of silver 13.65. Add to that the value of the buff nickel, I figure about a dollar. So I would say that is "worth it" for a fun little exercise like this. As you can imagine the coins were common dates, and worn, but not terribly so. But to my delight the walker half was easily EF which bumps its value up a lil bit. The rest of them were all good or fine, leaning towards good. Rick Feiler POB 1664 Lone Grove, OK, 73443 --------------------------------------------------------------- Next Tipisco. side column add from one of these coin mags. Three merc dimes for $4.99 p, d, and s. "VF or better." Well they delivered as promised, VF, but I would say just so and not better. Also sent a little catalog. pob 2067-CM, Corvallis OR 97339. I was mildly pleased with this response, but less so than Rick. There were lots of other ads I have seen like this but they promise subsequent mailings too for review or acceptance, but I was just going for one shotters only. I got a couple more out there and will report back if they are good or not. Now for you whales out there buying thousands of bucks of PMs a pop this is small potatoes, keep a movin. But for a humble person such as myself that just likes coins, a little surprise in the snail mail like this is really a delight and at least as pleasurable as a nice lunch. I try to take my pleasure where I can and this exercise has been worthwhile so far. |
